What's Happening?

Stock MarketSocial media stocks like Twitter and Facebook have been quite volatile lately. In addition, Tesla, an up and coming technology company, has had it rough lately. These are not stocks I am recommending, but I just note them since these trending and very popular sectors are fluctuating much more so than the general market. That being said, year-to-date the Dow Jones Industrial Average is flat, the NASDAQ is down around 2% and the S&P 500 is up 2%. It's been a pretty tame year thus far.

Geopolitically, Russia is still causing political concerns regarding their meddling in Ukraine. Domestically, yesterday Fed Chairwoman Janet Yellen said the economy was on track for "solid growth" in the current quarter after a harsh winter that temporarily crimped business activity. But she held out housing as a potentially more lasting problem. She went on to note that the Fed still plans to keep short-term interest rates near zero for the foreseeable future. Currently the stock market is behaving with much more temperament than the spring weather here in the Midwest.
